Not quite true, they alternate.  Recently they did firered/leafgreen (remakes of red/blue), then released diamond/pearl/platinum (new games), then heartgold/soulsilver (remakes of gold/silver), soon will be black/white, new games being released in japan soon.

I haven't played since i was a lot younger when Silver first came out, but recently (in the last year) I got a copy of leaf green and platinum and have played each a bit, and still fun.  I refuse to catch every pokemon seeing as how many are repeats and plenty suck ass, but still have fun with a simplistic RPG where you catch and raise little monsters to pwn people.

I stopped platinum for a while cause I got sick of fighting team rocket (or whatever) 500 different times in a row cause there were a fuckton of quests back to back to kill them all before finishing the gyms.  @_@
