It's simpler than you think. All you have to do is follow the is build, not die a lot, control buffs/jungle/dragon, and not be stupid.

Build:
Doran's Blade+Yomuu's Ghostblade+Berzerker's Grieves+Warmog's armor+Atma's Implaer+Frozen Mallet---SELL DORAN'S BLADE AT THIS POINT---+Bloodthirster or whatever else may work in your situation.

Abilities:
power level wuju style and meditate.

lane?: Top or bot, preferably not solo. (Master Yi has no CC and very few escape routes)

(optional) Master Yi is a great jungler

Initiate: about 3rd or fourth, maybe second.

Tips: -Meditate is literally your no die button.
-Try to refrain from using Alpha strike to farm minions. It is much more useful to chase down or escape your enemies.
-Let enemies who use a large amount of spells and abilities to do damage waste their cooldowns (like fiddle, ryze, or veigar for example)
-Go for enemies with the least health first
-pop highlander before wuju and youmuu when attacking someone. Pop wuju and yomuu when you are almost in attack range
-Alpha strike isn't actually a good initiator, SERIOUSLY JUST DON'T DO THAT.

Summoners: One of these: exhaust or ignite
and one of these: Flash or ghost

NOTES: BUY WARDS YOU STUPID FUCKER (or wriggle's lantern)

When I play Yi, I prefer to stack AS(attackspeed) and Crit + Damage (Infinity)

My build is as follows:

Boots + 3 HP Potions to start  >  Berserker Grieves  >  Zeal  > BF Blade  > Turn Zeal into Phantom Dancer  > Vampiric Scepter  >  Turn BF Blade into Infinity Edge  >  Turn Vampiric Scepter into Bloodthirster

Extra items (circumstantial) :
Madred's Bloodrazor
Black Cleaver
Frozen Mallet
Sword of the Divine (If Jax is carrying other team)

CORE ITEMS:
Infinity Edge, Phantom Dancer, Bloodthirster


Hybrid Build:
Lich Bane
Guinsoo's Rageblade
Wit's End
Rabadon's Deathcap
Chalice of Harmony
Sorcerer's Shoes

Everyone thinks AP Yi sucks, but oh my GOD. AP Yi can be beast, depending on how built he is.
Alpha strike will do half their health, and meditate will almost fully heal you. With Blue, you're pretty much invincible in the lane.

Dodge Chance Runes or Zhonya's Hourglass

With Shaco you can pretty much avoid any ganks attempted by tanky/dps melee champs.

1. Everyone knows AP Yi is fucking beast, who told you he sucks? You should probably alpha strike into their asses and meditate there.

2. Not Defensive at all, the point of building Yi tank is to remove his number one weakness (how squishy he is).
Atma's impaler adds 2% of your max health to your damge. Which allows you to buy health items to make you more survivable in a team fight. It essentially allows you to do what yi does best: Start Going and keep on going. Admittedly the build I use is more geared towards ganks and team fights rather than laning. Highlander and youmuu's provides enough attack speed, but that's not important when you do up to 300 damage every attack( without wuju activated).

Every time I solo queue I end up with idiots. My team feeds. The enemy team ganks. My team doesn't work together. We all get murdered.

Yeahhh, I know what you mean. So many people are starting to play this.. It kinda ruins the game so you usually have to have a pre-made otherwise you basically lose.
