Call of Duty series in general. It's honestly not bad, in fact I love
it, it's just people jizz over that game so hard. Talk to anyone at school or work and they ALWAYS have the Call of Duty.
World of Warcraft... I don't really see any hype other than it's popularity. It's an ok game to say the least. Just depends on how you view it As a game, not something that costs you monthly.

Portal is horrendously overrated and amongst one of the few games that I actually dislike but I'll state its good parts for the record.

Pros:
-Its mechanics are fantastic
-Good dark humor
-It's brought many people to the gaming scene
Cons
-It's too short
-It's only got two characters, only one of them talks.  Constantly.
-It has a glaring lack of depth
-Most of the people who were brought into gaming by Portal are obnoxious. (ie: "THE CAKE IS A LIE. XD")

Not to mention Valve pulled an epic troll moment at last year's E3 with it.  They said that they have a "big surprise that had nothing to do with Portal.  And then they announced Portal 2.

Your cons minus the last one, (which, by the way, is a problem for tons of games) are a direct result of Valve creating Portal not as a full-length game. They weren't trying to make a whole game. It was a short project started by some third party guize, and then valve was like HAY. It was a short game to play around with the idea. That's why they threw it on the orange box. It was designed to be short. That's what made it so accessible to casual gamers also, it doesn't take a tenfold of hours to enjoy.

It works, it's smooth, it plays well, GlaDOS's voice acting is funny and entertaining, the idea is creative, the storyline is humorous and so much more. For a project that was just suppose to be something on the side, and that was thought to go unseen and ignored, it did pretty fucking good. I would say Portal is the most well known Valve game. People without steam, or internet, have heard of this game probably. Unless their friends don't have internet either, then they probably live in the jungle.

I don't even feel like it's "over" rated. It has great reason to be liked. That's like saying Tetris is overrated. It's easy, short and fun to play. As it goes on, it makes your brain work more and more.

All I've heard people complain about is either that's overrated, or too short. I've heard others say they hate it cause of Glados but that's just because not everyone likes robots I guess. QQ

For the sake of reason, though, people praise it for too much, like it's an absolute masterpiece instead of a pet project.  That's the main problem I have and, admittedly, it does have more shining benefits than glaring flaws.

But it's when blatant fanboyism occurs, and when it shifts the priorities of an entire gaming studio to put assets towards franchises that have just been started, instead of ones that need to be finished...That's when things are just absurd.

The fact that it's so popular was not challenged, and is actually the issue.  At least Halo kids or Call Of Duty noobs don't insist that they're gamers when they've only played one four-hour game.

And comparing it to Tetris is pushing it; comparing a hallmark to a game that just came about is...suspicious.

It was worse with Modern Warfare 2 where the 12-13 year old kids thought they were the best players in the world for pulling off a point-blank noscope with the Barrett .50 cal while spamming.

I play Call of Duty, but I enjoy WAY more games other than Cod...
Gears of War is an extremely good example.

Personally, I think that kids think they're amazingly good at a game because of the competitive background of the game itself. [If you played Gears of War/CSS/Halo 2, you'll know competitive better than anyone on this forum...]

Essentially, Black Ops is just a mirror image of Call of Duty 4 which was the highlight of competitive gameplay in 2007. People don't realize that Call of Duty has become a disgrace to gaming and it's honestly horrible. People don't accept that every Cod game has its flaws so they say "WELL CALL OF DUTY 4 DIDN'T HAVE ANY GAME BREAKING BULLCRAP LIKE MW2 OR BLACK COCKS!"

Must we go back to P90 3x Frag w/ Juggernaut on Shipment? That was INSANELY gamebreaking...Especially on a server that hosted more than 12 people [WHICH IS E X T R E M E L Y COMMON!]

The whole franchise is overrated, so does it really matter anymore? I like Battlefield games more anyway...
People can like a game, even if they accept that it's overrated.

Regardless, I think the franchise needs to stop producing these mirrors because they're just flat out stupid. If we wanted to play the same old crap, we'd go play Cod4...
