Why is my microphone so sensitive, even though it's so quiet?

Every time I record myself talk, my headset microphone records whatever I say with a very low volume. I'm forced to edit the sound afterwards, but when I do I can hear everything in my room, including my LAPTOP's fan in the background. I've already desperately looked through all my sound settings, recording and playback, and the control panel, so don't bother asking.
Can anyone help? Does anyone know what's going on? I'm tired of hearing myself even open my mouth and swallowing saliva. Which is annoying because I'm thinking of putting commentary videos on my Youtube channel.
I could put my microphone away from my mouth a little bit, but that only makes the sound lower, and I'd have to bring up the volume by editing eventually, anyway. The same sounds would still be there.

I'm using a headset.

Maybe it's the software you use? I usually hear you just fine in vent.

I'm not sure but I don't think it should be this old, because most headphones I use for more than 6 months start messing up sounds or one side of it is silent. Right now, it's working just fine, nothing's messed up and the external volume switch thing is working as it should. I doubt if it were broken/messed, it would gain more sensitivity.
Maybe it is a software problem (my laptop's pretty old so the sound drivers are classic ones and impossible to find updates for) where I would need some kind of pronz hax sound manager or something that would help lower the loud, annoying bass sound you hear in my sample.

As for the model, I don't know where to find the name of it, nor do I think you'd have a purpose with only the name.

Wut? I'm using the mic on my headset. I'm gonna fix the OP in a min. I didn't know what the diff was between a headset and headphones about 10 minutes ago.

Basically, what that means is that the mic picks up everything in the room at an even volume. Basically, if you put it at the end of a hallway and you stand at one end and some one else stands at the other, and both of you speak at the same volume, it'll sound like you're both right next to the mic.
