Until recently, the ACT was traditionally required by colleges in the midwest, and the SAT was the test of choice in the northeast and on the east and west coasts. But now an increasing number of students are taking the ACT, and the majority of schools in the United States now accept both SAT and ACT test results.

They're totally different tests, that evaluate totally different things.

Both are virtually accepted anywhere. The SAT is a reasoning test, it'll consist of a reading section, a mathematics section, and a writing section. The ACT will cover more of what you have actually learned instead of how you reason, it covers math, science, reading, and English. I took the ACT once and I scored a 28. I only ever took my required PSAT and got the equivalence of a 1860 on the SAT. Neither are hard tests, I should have retaken my ACT since I only took it the beginning of my Junior year.

Take BOTH.  My suggestion take the Princeton Review and/or Kaplan prep courses for both - it helps. Taking both is good because it may aid in scholarship getting, and acceptance in college...

NOTE: The ACT is, IMHO, easier to take, as the majority of the test is reading comprehension, not necessarily specific to the topics...

My highest scores were from mathematics and science, a 35 in the Science section and a 32 in the math section.
