Kwaurtz' thread of recipes for cheap and hungry college kids.
« on: December 12, 2013, 05:25:37 AM »
So, I've decided to start posting this thread of recipes that are good and filling and relatively cheap for the hungry college goer.

First off is ramen carbonara:

Ingredients:

2 oz. Bacon bits (I use real bacon)
1 whole egg
2 packs of ramen noodles
4 cups of water
3 tablespoons of black pepper
1 ramen packet to taste
3 oz. parmesean cheese
1 tablespoon of butter

Step 1: Boil ramen in water till almost tender. Drain most water off, leaving a wee bit pooling in the bottom of the pot.

Step 2: Place ramen back over stove and start melting butter. Take off when butter is half way melted.

Step 3: Crack whole egg into ramen and mix throughouly with a fork until it forms a creamy sauce.

Step 4: Add the rest of the ingredients except the ramen packet. Add that last to taste

Step 5: Eat.

Background: Carbonara is a traditional italian pasta dish in which freshly friend bacon, its grease, and fresh eggs form a creamy sauce for pasta when combined with parmesean cheese. The egg does not cook until solid, but heats up enough to kill any bacteria that may be present while remaining creamy in texture.

Poutine, cheapest and most delicious motha fucking meal in the world of cholesterol:

1: FRIES, YOU KNOW HOW to make that!

2: Cheese curds or mozzarella or cheddar cubes

3: Canned gravy sauce ( poutine sauce, same crap)

Or try this recipe for poutine sauce from scratch:

 - Boil some chicken or beef bones in enough water ( more bones the better, more water if you want more sauce)
- After 40 minutes, remove bones
- Take some flour or corn starch, mix it with a spoonful of cold water in a cup until it becomes a watery paste
- Pour the mixture in the hot chicken or beef stock
- Add spices to taste
- Add 2 teaspoons of tomato paste or ketchup
- Add soy sauce for brownish colour and taste ( smoky taste or tastes like bbq)
- Finally if your sauce is still watery, then redo the step where you mix the flour or corn starch in a cup and add it back to the sauce to make it thicker.
- If your sauce is too thick, then add water and reboil.

Thanks, hope you enjoy.

Yo, this is about being cheap. Chicken bouillon or beef bouillon would be better for the price conscious consumer, as it has more uses than a weak stock, and cuts the time down. Good stock takes over a day to make and requires carrots/celery/onion/black pepper/thyme/bayleaf to make.

Fresh friend bacon is the best bacon. <3

I'm definitely going to try this though, gonna try experimenting with hot sauce.
This whole thing is a travesty.

For starters, Pillz is obviously the sexiest.

Egh, I can't stand carbonara sauce, especially of the citrus variety. But mostly because I don't like meals where cheese is the main taste/texture.

For cheap meals, can't go wrong with the extremely simple things - Bolognese, Chilli con Carne, Turkey salad in pitta, Bacon butties, omelettes, etc. No recipes at hand though as I've never really cooked (Really want to though)

Trust me, it's cheap, if a student doesn't have enough money to buy bones or meat, he can buy the can. This isn't a soup or anything, it's a sauce, the stock is only the meaty flavor that comes with the fats in order to make the sauce.

Cheese quesadillas, yo.

Get some mozz, and flour tortillas. Put cheese on half of tortilla, and then flip the other half over it.

Condition that pan with some butter, and drop that tortilla on there. Cook 'til both sides are golden brown, or cheese is fully melted and/or oozing out. Eat.

You could also add ham, tomato sauce, or anything else you want with cheese. Takes like 2 minutes, super cheap, and cheese is delicious, so bang.

I should make these for myself - didn't realize how easy they were, but it makes sense.

This.  I use chicken bouillon a lot and honestly unless it is a major part of the meal, you can barely tell the difference.  Cheap and easy the way I like it.

How to Chips:
- Go to store
- Buy
- Open
- Masticate

Alternatively you can replace parts 1 and 2 with:
- Go to nearest occupied house
- Take chips

The Alternative saves much more money!
