Piss Christ Controversy

In 1987, a photographer named Andrew Serrano took a picture of a plastic crucifix in a jar of his urine. This picture is known as Piss Christ and it bestowed Serrano with $15,000 from the government. Getting money for covering Jesus with urine outraged many people. Serrano soon after received death threats and hate mail from the American public. A nun said that it is a beautiful picture. Serrano claims that it targets perceived commercializing or cheapening of Christian icons in contemporary culture.



Is this picture appropriate and does it have a message which justifies it's use of urine. Why or why not?

Honestly this is a perfect thing to get money for. This man took a subject that is often discussed, but attached an image to it. Religion's like Christianity are all about money now a days. They have massive televisions and business' based around it, and thats not what it should be about.

Is it so much Christian's doing it as much as it is Major companies doing it? Example: Companies have Christmas sales and use it to their advantage to get more shoppers.

Both, there was a recent televised event where three really well known televangelists when on to a talk show, were completely shaded, dubbed over, but the three of them did not believe in the message they preached anymore, and only did it because thats how they made their leaving, preaching a message they do not mean.

To avoid confusion. It's the crucifix which is in the jar of urine, not a picture of a crucifix covered in urine.

I'd say all in all it's just a manipulation of scripture in order to get a few more dollars. I don't think it's even right for these people who take advantage of Christian to be called Christians. As far as the commercialization goes, even Easter is used as a marketing tool for chocolate companies. I believe the picture has a good message, however, is the use of urine a poor choice to convey this message?

i'd say, it does have some symbolic though, how weas Christ treated when he was here on earth (asuming he was) well he was treated like shit/piss =P

but yeah, if you can make money from throwing some paint on a paint thingy (damn i'm tired) then why not get money for this?

Art is all about shit. U make something, Have a "fake" feeling about it. Make a fake story around it. And you have your money. Enjoy swindling people...

Is that why people with nice jobs quit so they can pursue a career in arts like music and film making? So they can make more money? NEWS FLASH: People make a lot less money making art then they would in a day job.
