Ok... Read up, and now I need to find very old Nvidia drivers... or it will happen again... SIGH. 

Hmm.  Is the graphics card in a socket and replaceable with an ATI?  THAT is a good question...

depends on what socket your using agp, pciE or pci?
I had the same problem with my old nvidia card on my deceased deskptop, I had to find old drivers for nvidia because apparently the new ones suck  gizz.
also in regards to the asus comment earlier I use a Asus G51 laptop with the NVIDIA 260M 4gb DDR3 ram and it burns through games like none other. I have not had one complaint yet about asus.

Id say find older drivers and see if that fixes it otherwise wait till you become employed and get like an ATI 5850, its good for the price unless you want to play like crysis and shit then skip the 5870 and get the 5970. I just installed it into my homebuilt desktop and oh my god insta-jizz

any ati i have used has had worse driver problems than you describe here (seriously, there was a time it would crash at least once a day if not more due to the drivers never working right)

i havent got drivers in quite some time so i honestly forget where i used to get them other than nvidia's support site. 
Though Nvidia support usually archives them these days, you could just go to the site find your card and look under the driver archives, they should have at least 2 years back.

FYI stupid lawsuit we bought a house under building, we got the plans on how to build the garage so we did, exactly as we should. turns out our plans were wrong so we are 7 cubic centimetres over on his property.... this lawsuit has been going on for around 2 years now
