I wouldn't touch the idea of putting up an SS13 server with a ten foot pole. BYOND is a terrible, terrible platform, developing for it is even worse, servers require massive amounts of administration, and hosting the game is extremely system intensive due to BYOND being shit and very unoptimized code, which has been passed between open-source community developers so many times it's hard to count. SS13 communities have a hard enough time getting off the ground as-is, so I wouldn't recommend it. Normally I wouldn't oppose to hosting a game I love so dearly, but it's just not easily possible unless a
lot of our players take a liking to it.
The game is definitely fun to play, though. I have a feeling the
/tg/ server best suits the playstyle of CG members, however I play on
BS12, which is much more oriented on serious-roleplay. I wouldn't mind helping organize an SS13 game night, though, where people interested in learning and those who already play could all pop into a server and figure it out. (Since it can be difficult to learn without guidance.)
However, if you're going to give the game a spin, be warned that playing on the Goonstation servers (the ones labeled Gibbed), may leave a bad taste in your mouth. Players take winning to the extreme there, and often murder you simply because you still happen to be alive. I've heard from other players that the administrators there are very abusive, as well, but I haven't witnessed that first hand. /tg/, which I linked earlier, is a bit better of a middle ground between intense roleplay and no roleplay. Really, it's better to avoid most of the servers listed publicly altogether. I haven't tried all of them, but hidden servers tend to have better players, from what I've observed.
