Title: Christovski's thread of bands you don't listen to but should.
Post by: Christovski on February 05, 2013, 08:48:55 PM
Ok, so this thread I will be updating every day with a new song from a band that is awesome and underrated.
I'm no hipster (hence I'm sharing this music not bragging about noone ever hearing of it) but I like lots of stuff that people haven't heard of.

Lets see how long I can go before someone actually likes a song that I post!  :P

Starting off we have And So I Watch You From Afar (Abbreved to ASIWYFA cause its friggin long)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfRq8KhLM_M

I found out about these guys and their first album here because this someone talking about the album described it like this:
"OH MY GOD WE WON THE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AND THE LOTTERY AND WE’RE SPENDING THE LOTTERY MONEY ON A FUCKING ROCKET SHIP AND WE’RE GONNA GO CARVE A HUGE DICK ON THE MOON WITH A GIANT LASER WE PUT ON THE ROCKET SHIP AND ALL OF OUR PETS HAVE BECOME IMMORTAL AND WE JUST MADE OUT WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PERSON WE’VE EVER MET AND IT TURNS OUT THEIR MOM IS REALLY REALLY NICE TOO AND THIS COFFEE WE’RE DRINKING IS FUCKING DELICIOUS I THINK IT’S THAT STUFF THAT CIVET CATS POOP OUT AND IT’S OUR BIRTHDAY PARTY AND EVERYONE IS INVITED AND NOBODY WILL EVER BE MEAN TO ANYBODY ELSE EVER AGAIN is pretty much what this album sounds like"

They also get kinda crazy technical metal-ish on some tracks like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgAXpsFyYrM

I'd prefer if folks don't post their own songs since there are other threads to do that in like the songs you listen to thread, but people can have discussion within this thread

Today it is Drone/Doom/Psychedelic/Stoner rock band Earth.  Their songs vary from minimalistic drone to grooving psychedelia like this track.

Definitely not everyone's cup of tea.  Definitely your typical Sub-Pop video, but at least they cared enough to promote the bands back then.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=866PRjwLOcE

Also, this is one of their rare tracks with lyrics, others are more like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apmIX4piRsQ

So I forgot the thread yesterday CAUSE I'M A JERK ok more like it didn't show up in my unread/updated topics lists, but anyway today gets TWO UPDATES to make up for it!

Ok so this is WAY more mainstream because it is dubstep, but I really like these guys and they aren't fucking worldwide like Skrillex and shit.

Bassnectar.  Delicious bass nectar.  More musical than some harsher dubstep like Skril, but harsher than the chill stuff.
For me its the goldilocks of dubstep, not too ridiculous, not too tame, it is JUST RIGHT.

Yeah I got into Bassnectar lately and have a whole Pandora station for them; they're awesome. Teleport Massive is one of my favorites by them right now for some reason, that Time Stretch and anything else they make.

Ok this next band is currently my favorite right now.  This Will Destroy You (taken from a song title they thought about using, then realized the name is hilariously cheesy, so they named the band) Epic instrumental post-rock to be the soundtrack for the life of an amazing person.

These guys make some really cool music, it generally takes a while to build up from calm and quiet, to HOLY SHIT but man is it good.
This track has a lot of their types of sound mashed together to give a good idea of the stuff they do, for A.D.D. people who dont want to wait to get to the epic part, skip to 2:50ish

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ov701xUsQyU
here's a link to the studio version if you want to hear the guitar better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htGmTJNsOr0

The reason they are now my top favorite is that they manned up more than any band I've ever seen.  Their 2nd album had a string section on the recording, and instead of pussying out like most bands and using keyboard or a backing recording of the strings, they played LIVE WITH A STRING ORCHESTRA.  I was at this show having my mind blown, and the guy next to me recorded it thank god here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLVsrGtDfbs
Hard to see much since we were so close to the stage, but theres about 10-12 members of the string orchestra, 1 bass, 2 cello, and violas/violins/whatever
Also the second guitarist is lonely over to the right, but he uses an e-bow to sustain his notes and play the guitar like a keyboard almost it is amazing.

I'm sure that because I love it, everyone here's gonna think it sucks but man these guys put on a great fucking show!

I am so shocked no one gives fucks about my fav band  NOPE CHUCK TESTA  parrot

Moving on, heres some groove for your day.

Sungrazer.  German heavy psychedelic rock, tuned down to C for maximum crunch.  Fat and distorted while still keeping a nice bluesy groove, vocalists who can actually sing, and to top it off it is only 3 guys: drums, bass&vocal, guitar&vocal, no extra bullshit and these guys kill it.
The actual lyrics are kinda meh, but you can't really complain as they are Germans speaking english as their second language...

If you're impatient waiting through the buildup and just want to get to the heavy shit, skip ahead to 2:55

Next is one of my favorite underground band from the late 80's early 90's, The Melvins.

Fun fact: Kurt Cobain auditioned to be the drummer for The Melvins in the mid-80's, but got too nervous and completely choked.  (He played drums before taking up guitar)
Imagine how different the musical world would be if they had Kurt Cobain on drums instead of Dale Crover, so that Kurt never started Nirvana with Chris Novoselic!

These guys are kinda grungy with some 70s metal thrown in, really fun 3-piece band who just rock out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hp5r9qwqpPc

They also pioneered a genre called "Sludge" which is very distorted and very very slow tempo.
The fun story is that they started slowing down their songs at live shows wayyyy down to piss off the harcore punk kids who kept yelling at them to play faster.  How slow you ask?
Check out Hag Me, one of their slowest songs.  Vocals don't even come in until 1:30.

Somehow CKY managed to avoid actual fame.  It isn't like they tried, their promo videos were the predecessor to what would become Jackass.
I'm sure everyone knows of Bam Margera from Jackass, well his brother, Jess Margera, is the drummer of CKY.

CKY is awesome.  Kind of metal with some synth, but also grungy rock, nothing too fierce and really really hard to describe.

Personally I think the biggest reason CKY stayed small, was due to their sound being so hard to explain, the fan following was surely dedicated as hell, and pretty decent size, but never came close to mainstream.

This track off of I.D.R. was probably the most popular:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhpnSMRLSSs

Their live shows were nuts too!  (actual song starts at 1:16)  This one's more metal compared to the first track, but still got that synthy hook in there.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH3aC68QtA8

Sadly they are broken up right now, hopefully they resolve their differences and rejoin someday!  They went through a lot of bassists, but Deron Chad and Jess were a killer team of guys.

I was depressed about CKY breaking up so I haven't posted in 2 days but no bonus update today just one those 2 days will remain a memorial to the awesomeness that was CKY.

Blockhead was a hip hop producer who also put out a couple sample/electronic/beat/chill albums that are just amazingly feels.

This song blew my mind when I first heard it and I spend a LONG time trying to find out who the song was by or what it was called but I finally did and its just awesomeness.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvcHGu95XGM

That one's a bit more energetic, but on average most songs are more chill like this one:

Fu Manchu is awesome skate rock/stoner rock that just good old fashioned fun rock with a lot of fuzz and the songs are about awesome old cars, skating, and cheesy sci-fi stuff.  Just good driving music and they have a lot of fun with it, they are not what I would call serious.  Just good times music.  Also lots and lots of fuzz.

Again, these guys are just about having a good time live

ARRRRG; YOU BLOCKHEAD.

I think you might of shown me Blockhead.. You might of posted it years ago or maybe I did; I don't recall where I first heard it but I've loved it ever since. His newer albums are the dopest. He has some beautifully hypnotic music and I've spent many hours relaxing to his shit.

Also Metallica is jokes; I mean they're an interesting band (mainly just their breakup history is interesting) with a few mediocre songs like One and Sandman but otherwise I'd rather not listen to them.

Yeah his new albums good but I am nostalgic for the early stuff.

I think the Metallica comment was just trolling.  Either that or the guy's just dumb fanboy.

Today is more psychedelic groove from Germany, similar to Sungrazer but more mellow, and slightly less cheesy lyrics.
Another 3 piece like Sungrazer as well, Guitar&vocal, bass, drums.  They have a lot of blues influence, especially on their newer songs.
Not nearly as fuzzy and distorted as Sungrazer, but it still gets pretty heavy as they tune down to C a good chunk of the time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6hje6W2CeQ

Here's a more mellow track, with reversed drums that just sound so awesome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAd813OD_pk

A lot of these bands you should check out more tracks on youtube, as most of these bands have shitload of albums released with some variety in their sound, and I haven't bought every album so there's tons of stuff from these bands I haven't even heard.  SO MUCH MUSIC

Holy shit I haven't posted TYCHO yet what the hell!  Artist-turned-electronic-musician, this dude makes some super chill beautiful songs.
His newest album (not that new anymore) is THE thing to chill me out when shit is stressing me the hell out.
It just makes me feel like I'm at the top of a huge snow-capped mountain but the weather is clear as hell not a cloud in sight and the sun is just making it beautiful out and I'm so chill at the top of this mountain as this music floats on the air and echoes.  Man, its that good (no I don't do drugs sorry kids) its like musical medicine for stress, and with how stressed I get I need this.

Album kicks off slow but steady
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mehLx_Fjv_c

Starts acoustic then gets so smooth and groove
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFr9StkVwTk

I'll put it simple, this track has BUMP.  FAT ASS BASS.  CRAZY SYNTH.

I am surprised that even Pillz didn't like Tycho, oh well moving on

Torche...how to describe....Happy Metal.  Yeah its like that.  It's like, brutal heavy guitars and drums, but the melodies are really upbeat and the songs are kind of happy sounding, but its still got that brutal metal instrumental sound, even if the instruments are playing something happy sounding.

Confused?  LISTEN!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgvqEJstNrw

Sometimes they are slower and less zany like this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HfdaR5qZJH8

Honorable mention: this track is how I found out about these guys and I was INSTANTLY hooked on it!  A little more badass than the previous two songs.

Everyone hates the goodness in this thread, so how about some friggin weirdness.

Faith No More, amazing, had one hit single but noone paid much attention.  The real awesome came on their next album.  These guys were nuts live, check this shit out just weird 90s rock/metal/weird shit.  Also, some might recognize (Big) Jim Martin from his cameo in Bill and Ted

Audio and video not quite synced up, but the performance is amazing.  Mike Patton (vocals) does a lot of voice acting work in games these days, as he can do crazy shit with his voice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sRFPs7L9Vgw

This ones a bit nicer on the ears, but still fun I mean come on, "Everything's Ruined"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5irHyoRNcRY

Have some hilarity!  The gay keyboardist wrote a song about sucking dick to embarass the straight singer.  What happened?  It became their most popular song at live shows because of how hilarious he found it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYc0GRLu274

Also honorable mention, just for the line @4:00 that always cracks me up when I hear it!

SAMSARA BLUES EXPERIMENT

Not for people with ADD.  Long ass groove songs full of fuzz.  Not much blues really more like someone threw blues in a closet with psychedelia and some heavy heavy shit.  Really good stuff to put on the whole album straight when driving or chilling.

Here are some of their shorter songs, the longest one I have on an album is 21 minutes.

Morphine.  Described as "Low music" kinda mellow bluesy but unlike anything I can really describe.  They're really weird and I don't expect anyone to like them, but they are one of my favorite bands just because their sound is so original, I've found nothing to compare it to.  Simply, they describe themselves as "Baritone people", with a deep-voiced singer playing a weird hybrid between a bass and a slide-guitar, and a baritone sax, along with a drummer, they just aren't like anything you've seen.

They go from mellow in "Cure for Pain"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=985JGeGq_tc

To grooving in "Buena"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M34iZH4-qkI

To just wacky in "Sharks", the slide bass sounds more like a dirtbike motor when the distortion kicks in at 0:34
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUaWBjxlc5Q

And for just chaos, there's Free Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qSZ50J-Wass

Granted noone is reading this post anymore because of how weird these guys are but screw you Morphine was awesome and I'm so sad Mark Sandman had a heart attack on stage and died so I can never see them play live  :'(

Wo-Fat, groovin straightforward rock, and they have fun with the vocals, lots of movie references and whatnot, like Fu Manchu these guys just like to rock and have a good time, no overly macho bullshit like you get with metal bands these days, just a bunch of guys rockin it to be awesome ;D

Pallbearer is about as close as you can get to Black Sabbath in the modern age, being a huge fan of Sabbath I love these guys
Saw them at a small club in Boston and these guys rock it hard, no bullshit machismo, just a bunch of average humble guys who play some way better than average heavy rock.  Downtuned but clear and not chuggy, with wailing vocals very reminiscent of Ozzy, heavy guitar riffing and melodic solos with a monstrous distorted bass groove tying it to the heavy drums.
Only complaint might be that the songs are a BIT long, even for me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8p6Rkax3mg

Did I mention I had a great time seeing them live?  (obviously this is not when I saw them but one of the few live vids I found where sound isn't COMPLETE shit.)

edit: here's a bit better live video, they must be catching on because this place is bigger than the place I saw them last fall!

M.O.P. these guys are awesome, fierce as hell, and not in it for money or women like most shit rappers these days.

Just fierce rapping with some seriously fat ass beats I can't sit still when listening to these guys.  Haters are PROBABLY gonna hate but fuck it, there is such a thing as good hip-hop and this is it.

J Dilla made albums of all sorts of cool little bits and pieces, lots get used as backing beats for hip-hop songs, personally I find his albums fun to listen to, because the longest track is 2 minutes, so its just a ton of short songs of cool beats loops and stuff.  Great if you've got ADD and just want to hear a bunch of random crazy stuff, I really like it.
